Cabo San Lucas Oceans

The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez are both around Cabo San Lucas. They meet at what is called Land's End where the rock formation El Arco is located and right in front of Playa del Amor beach. This area, where the two oceans meet is one of the world's unique ocean environments. In the Sea of Cortez you can find over 800 marine species. The Sea of Cortez has the largest living coral reef in the the world, and so many species of fish including sea lions, sea turtles, large schools of fish, giant manta rays and even hammerhead sharks, it makes it an extremely unique place to be.

Cabo San Lucas is very unique in the fact that it has protected marine sanctuary. Well actually it is more like the Cabo San Lucas Bay has many dive sites that are actually protected. They were protected in 1973, when they were declared the second underwater marine park. These sites include underwater sand falls, which is where the sand actually falls off an underwater cliff. It looks just like a waterfall but, underwater and of sand.

Also, you can find sites with both hard and soft corral. Octopus and sea fans are not uncommon sightings in this area. Underwater canyons are a must for experienced divers. You might also get to see a ship wreck if you dive in the right spot! Chileno Reef is a beautiful, protected finger reef that starts right at the shores of Chileno Beach and extends out into the bay for about 1/2 mile. The reef has a many of tropical's, starfish, urchins, hydroids and eels. This is a good place for beginner divers and snorkelers.

Also, if you travel a little bit to Cabo Pumo you will find the only living coral reef on the western side of North America. It is by far the best part of the whole Sea of Cortez. There is so much marine life it is unbelievable. This area is actually a National Marine Sanctuary. It is only a couple of hours away from Cabo San Lucas and is definitely worth the drive if you are really interested in snorkeling or diving.
