Cabo San Lucas Fishing

Cabo San Lucas is famous for being one of the best sport fishing regions and it definitely deserves that title. There isn't anywhere else that you can find quite so many species of fish in a such a small area not too far from shore, than in Cabo San Lucas. To read more about the special environment this area is known for visit, the Cabo San Lucas Ocean page.

Although Cabo San Lucas is famous for it's billfish, marlin, sailfish, swordfish and other deep sea fish, Cabo is also great people who surf cast, small boaters and beginners. In Cabo you can fish inshore, onshore or offshore. Onshore is obviously more accessible especially for tourists because you don't need a boat. Surf fishing as we call it is best along the any of the beaches along the Corridor or anywhere you can get your line in the water in the Sea of Cortez. Some of the more common types of fish you might catch fishing on shore are: sand bass, lady fish, leopard shark, halibut and opaleye. It is not unknown to have actually caught Marlin onshore although only by anglers who have the right tackle. The puffer fish is commonly caught onshore although it is NOT good to eat.

Inshore fishing only requires a small boat. Either a rental or a small fishing cruise or bring your own boat! You can reach depths of up to 350 ft inshore. Some of the inshore catches include: groupers, red and yellow snapper, sea bass, barracuda, sierra and bonito shark. The Cabrilla also can be caught inshore although, it must be released.

Obviously the bigger fish can be found in the deeper waters. They also require bigger boats, bigger tackle and more time to get to them. Offshore fishing is probably for the more avid fisherman, which has a little more experience than a beginner. You can always hire a fishing guide who has the right boat and the right equipment and the good news is the Cabo San Lucas Harbor is full of them. Some of the fish that can be caught offshore are: billfish, sailfish, striped, blue and black marlin, wahoo, yellowtail and tuna.
